This was a lowland river and to see Blue Ducks there like in the old days was just thrilling, and astoundingly rare. We caught some fine fish and then sat on a cobble bar in the darkening cool with our new mates. When we got to the rise pool, there was a big-time bang up happening, and right in the major part of it at the heavy water at the run-in to the pool were 2 Blue Ducks, again, right in with the trout and eating the emergent flies too! but we were just a wee tad late because we had an eel-trap to set. Though apparently late in the season for that, the Great Pepper Wing (or spiny gilled mayfly, coloburiscus) was coming off nicely…. Just last season, my mate Tamati (not the one on that other thread) and I went down for the rise. They are really catchable then and actually the ducks are way more spooky than the fish. But late in the season a big raft of Scaup comes in and are dabbing and raising a ruckus and then the trout, brownies, are literally among them swimming around and feeding, on caddis usually.
Here, a very large pool holds some fine trout, but it is shallow, generally calm, and the fish are tough customers.
